Named by the NSW or "Rum" Corps in 1809, after the Earl of Minto (then Viceroy of India), Minto is now home to over 11,000 people. Minto is located 50 kilometres south-west of the Sydney Central Business District, within the local government area of Campbelltown.
Around a third of the households in Minto are public housing, with 44% of the suburb's households renting their homes.

4.5% of people in Minto have Australian Indigenous heritage, making it the biggest community in the Campbelltown area.

Campbelltown is Sydney's fourth most disadvantaged area, and within the region the distribution of low-income households is concentrated in five suburbs, including Claymore, Airds and Minto.

Over a quarter of Minto was born overseas, with half having arrived since 1986. A little under 20% of people in Minto come from non-English speaking backgrounds.

Over 60% of the Minto population are under 35. Less than 5% are over 60.
The main industries of employment are manufacturing and wholesale/retail (each a little over 20%). Minto has lower levels of employment in comparison to Campbelltown City and the rest of Sydney.
