Margaret Davis
My real life hero is Cathy Freeman

I live in Minto and I’m in Year 9 at Sarah Redfern High School. I’m Aboriginal from the Dungadi tribe from up the coast.

My real life hero is Cathy Freeman. I’d like to be able to run like her. When I run, I come first or second. I like her because she’s a fast runner and she represents our background.

My favourite subject is Maths and English, so I’ve got two. When I finish school, I’d like to be a dancer or a basketballer. My main thing I like is dancing. Last year we performed in the finals for Rock Eisteddfod but we didn’t get a place. I like playing basketball. My friends got me into it after we went away for the Friendship Games. We met people from everywhere, from America and New Zealand, Tonga and Samoa.

My greatest achievement is being in the Rock Eisteddfod because me, my brother and my sister-in-law were the leads and my second oldest brother was a kangaroo in it. Our whole family did it.

My happiest memory of Minto was my family at my Nan’s wedding. What I like about living in Minto is friends are all around and you know everybody. What I don’t like about Minto is the large number of druggies. We like keeping our community clean and when people are on drugs, they leave needles around.

The best thing about being a part of the Aboriginal community is that we all get along even though we can have our little fights sometimes. If we fight, the elders will get together and sort it out real quick.

My favourite photo is my Year 6 farewell with my dad and the one of me and my mum. My Year 6 photo of me and my dad is special because, well he’s really my uncle, but he had me ever since I was a baby because my mum passed away so I call him dad. If anything happens, I don’t know what I’d do without him. The photo with me and my step mum, I love her so much, she’s had me since she was 18 and she’s still got me. I’m 14 now.
